so, thought i might as well throw ths out there and see what you guys think of my dad's invention. It's an alternate source of energy he calls the gravitron.
How it works is there's these incredibly heavy falling gyros that spin as they fall. they come to the bottom of a track where the power of their energy can be harnessed. Then their own inertia and the force of the spinning carries them back up to the top (which would be a couple hundred feet high) where they roll over and fall down again.
But don't be fooled into thinking this is perpetual motion. It's not. It doesn't go the same pace all the way around, it slows down as it's reaching the top. and you don't just apply your energy once and watch it go. Every time it falls gravity is being reapplied, thus keeping it going for as long as it needs to.
The only real costs of it are making the thing and occasional repairs (though how the heck do you break a couple-ton metal gyro?) and it's not incredibly hard to do either one of them. not to mention it would take the emissions of coal and oil burning down to nothing and we could have fully electric cars that are powered by gravitrons that line the roads every x number of miles. Of course, the calculations would be tedious to find the perfect balance of cars to gravitrons to distance and yadda yadda. I'll leave that to someone that likes math. =D
But yeah, I'd love to hear your feedback on it and any ideas for improvement you can think of. and who knows, maybe in a few years my dad can get a patent on it or funding from somewhere to make it.

Your fathers invention sounds much like a toy I used to have when I was a kid. It works by much the same principles as what you've explained.
Oh and for the whole car thing. If I may make a suggestion, instead of having to charge every X miles how about lining a track down on the road that cars can attach to in some fashion with the generator powering it. (Think of the little electric toy cars that race around on the track)
Just a thought, its a good idea, he should pursue this.
actually, that would save a seriously huge amount of space. wow. that's a great idea! I'm so glad my dad is visiting for father's day today. now i can tell him. woohoo! Thank-you!
